The Resistance #1 Review- Too Close to Reality

By Nolan P. Smith

When I got the email on what books came in for me this past week, I have to say that I was most excited to see the lineup for AWA Studios. First on the list is The Resistance #1, from writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Mike Deodato Jr., Frank Martin Jr., and an excellent cover by Rahzzah.

The story is eerily similar to our current global climate amid the COVID-19 crisis. The world is struck with a virus that wipes out millions. Residents isolated at home, limited resources- it is surreal to read a story so close to our reality right now. Then the virus went dormant, and a small percentage of the survivors manifested powers. How did the virus stop all of a sudden? How did the virus start in the first place? We see how it all starts to tie together and get a glimpse at the individuals who suddenly have powers, including two sisters who play a huge part in stopping the virus.

I have been a fan of J. Michael Straczynski for some time now, so when I heard of AWA and this new series by Straczynski, I had to pre-order it. Combine that with Mike Deodato Jr, another legend in the comic book industry that I have been a fan of for years, and I was sold before I even read the book. The Resistance hits so close to home; it’s chilling. I was drawn in right from the get-go, and the visuals drive the tone home. I really want to see what happens next, what these people with superpowers end up doing, and how the story comes full circle.

AWA Studios hits a home run with The Resistance, as this issue paves the way to a bright future for the studio with a bleak story with a glimmer of hope for the world.
