Grrl Scouts: Magic Socks #1 Review

GrrlScoutsMagicSocks_01-1Mahfood’s Grrl Scouts: Magic Socks delves into the world’s seedy underbelly

By Amie Macias

This week I jumped head first without a parachute into the psychedelic, drug induced madness that is known as the Grrl Scouts: Magic Scouts from Image Comics.

Gwen, Daphne, and Rita make up the 3 fierce female characters known as the Grrl Scouts, who are ass kicking, drug dealing, femme fatales known for hiding their wares inside Girl Scout cookie boxes.

Magic Socks opens up with our 3 leading ladies having been estranged from one another for a year. Events quickly unfold and we find the 3 reunited, brought together by an unexpected foe from their past.

Creator and Writer Jim Mahfood (Generation X Underground Special, Clerks) does a charming job showing the seedy underbelly of the drug scene, with harmonious tidbits from the strip clubs. Mix in Justin Stewart’s (Jesus Hates Zombies, Miami Vice Remix) coloring and lettering with a dash of Carmen Acosta’s (Henchgirl, Young Justice) design expertise and you’re in for one helluva ride. Enjoy!!! And tune in for issue #2 to see what’s up with those damn socks.

I give this book an 8 out of 10 (too many n-words for my liking but the homage to I Hate FairyLand and Tank Girl page makes up for it – 2 of my favs)
