The Beauty #5 Review: Worse Than the Disease

(Victor Valley)– There is an old saying: “The cure is worse than the disease”. This has never been more true than in The Beauty #5.

Still on the run, agents Foster and Vaughn continue their journey towards thwarting the pharmaceutical company and the government by giving the world a free cure for the Beauty. When a rouge team of scientists and the intrepid agents develop a cure that can spread like the flu, they must fight against the clock and sadistic forces for the chance save hundreds of millions of people around the world. With a jaw-dropping cliffhanger at the end of the issue, The Beauty #5 leaves shocked readers looking forward to January (and not just for the football!).

Within the narrative of the story, agents Foster and Vaughn fill the role of the average person. Victimized by the government and a large company who seek to profit from the misery and death of the population, Foster and Vaughn do everything they can to fight the schemes of those who seek to kill them and millions. Just as helpless as the rest of the population, they see the evil of those in power and feel like they need to take extreme measures to stop them before it is too late.

Never short on social commentary, Jeremy Haun’s, epic tale of corporate greed and society’s obsession with looks, continues to deliver a tale that is not only entertaining, but causes some societal reflection as well. Throw in a hired gun (for the big pharma/government side) who is shown to be as sadistic as he is ugly (obviously, he did not catch the Beauty), and the agents and their accomplices appear to be fighting an uphill battle that may eventually prove unwinnable (which may end up being the eventual point of the story).

Not only does Jeremy Haun continue to write a clever and action-packed tale, his artwork continues to impress as well. The solid line and sharp color style is not only pleasant to look at, but also brings the world of The Beauty to life month after month. This is by far my favorite series Image is currently publishing. Here is to wishing The Beauty team Happy Holidays and looking forward to the New Year and what lies in store for our favorite agents on the run.
