Midnight Sky #1 Review: No Moon Rising
By Nolan P. Smith
Not all apocalyptic scenarios need zombies. Take Midnight Sky from Scout Comics. The sun gets blotted out of the sky, weird demons that are exposed in the light surface, and a family is torn between it all: sounds amazing? It is.
From writer James Pruett, illustrated by Scott Van Domelen, with colors by Ilaria Fella, Midnight Sky gives us an excellent introduction to this world and then some. We meet Jennifer and her family before everything goes to hell before the world turns dark. We see her husband has a dark side to him, and we see more of it as the book goes on. We jump thirteen years down the road and see the world in shambles, food is scarce, looters are out, and Jennifer can still handle herself. Her kids, Alejandro and Elita, hold secrets of their own as the book progresses. We see the demon-like monsters and how they see linked to Jennifer. We also get a cool serve at the end, setting up for a main event cliffhanger.
Pruitt has created a very eerie yet appealing world here. I am a fan of post-apocalyptic stories, especially when they break the mold of the zombie horde. The artwork here is spot on, as Van Domelen and crew deliver some fantastic visuals, with distinct coloring to go with the world, both pre and post-event. The story feels original and fresh, leaving wanting to know what’s next. What exactly is up with Jennifer’s family? Does it have something to do with the Midnight Sky? I cannot wait to check out the second issue to dive deeper.
Rating: 9.0 out of 10.
