Star Trek: Picard Season 1 Review- Make It So!

By Daniel Schwartz

There has been a lot of anticipation surrounding CBS All Access’ new series Star Trek: Picard. First of all, it continues the story of everyone’s favorite Captain (that was not killed by a falling bridge). Secondly, it takes place after the events of Star Trek Voyager. The Chis Pine movies and Star Trek Discovery takes place in the “past” and do not offer a look at what has become of the universe fans fell in love with in the ’90s. As a fan of TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, I was very curious to see how Starfleet and all of my favorite characters had moved on.

Warning: Spoilers below for Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard.

The series begins with Enterprise D, and E Captain Jean Luc Picard retired and making wine at his villa in France. He is haunted by dreams of his former deceased crewmate Data (who died in Star Trek Nemesis). While he is trying to make sense of them, he is introduced to a young woman who feels drawn to him and is in danger. Picard agrees to help her and quickly finds himself plunged into a dangerous mission to save Data’s “daughter” from Romulan agents that want to destroy her.

Enlisting the help of a former friend and ally, a scientist, a Romulan warrior, an eccentric captain, and even Seven of Nine, Picard boards the La Sirena and attempts to save Data’s daughter and her homeworld.

The entire first season of the show is fantastic. There are ten episodes and no filler. Every episode steps up the action and dives deeper into the story. The characters are definitely flawed and complex but likable at the same time.

One of the breakout new characters that add heart to the show is Captain Rios (Captain of the La Sirena). His character has an interesting history, and he pulls a Harrison Wells by having several different holographic versions of himself, all with different accents and personalities ( I love that the engineering hologram is Scottish).

These are the five craziest things that happened this season:

1. The Romulans have a Borg cube.

2. The star that destroyed Romulus and led to the alternate timeline of the Chris Pine movies already happened and led to Picard resigning his commission.

3. Seven of Nine left Starfleet and became a galactic vigilante.

4. Hugh has been de-Borged and is helping the Romulans research their cube.

5. Picard ends the season by having his consciousness transferred to a robot body.

And that is just in the first ten episodes! I can’t wait to see what Season 2 holds.

Rating 10 out of 10. I am definitely re-watching this season (right after I get caught up on Discovery!).
