Godzilla vs. Chicago Review

IDW has expanded its Godzilla Comic Books in this series of Godzilla vs. America. Over the years, IDW has published many Godzilla comic books. This one-shot is Godzilla vs. Chicago, where four unique stories involving Godzilla in Chicago are collected into one issue.

The artwork in all four stories is fantastic. The first story starts Fangoolie, a man in a flying fan suit. He used to be liked by the people in Chicago, but all of that changed when he caused the Chicago Bears to lose a big game when he crashed a ball for a field goal. He later gets a job as a janitor and steals Mechagodzilla from his work, and he operates it to get revenge on those who did him wrong, like his ex-girlfriend, his neighbor, and the people at the football game. The awesome part was when Godzilla came from below the water onto the land to fight Mechagodzilla. This first story is awesome, and I wish it could have gone on longer. Seeing Godzilla come out to fight in movies and comics is a thrill. Fangoolie is not one of my favorites; he tries too hard to impress others. He made a big mistake in finding out who he was messing with when he decided to operate Mechagodzilla.

The second story focuses on the romance of Jessie, an engineering student, on a train ride. She sees her crush, Cameron, and she is not sure if she should talk to him. When she decides to make that move, there is news of seismic activity that is about to happen. Godzilla comes out in a surprise, and the two have to figure out how to survive. This second story is also good. Like many of us, we are scared to make that move or step in life, and suddenly something occurs. That something can be an accident, a strong wing, or even Godzilla coming out of nowhere. Just like the first story, it could have been made longer. More could have been added to see Godzilla destroy the city, and more people could have helped out.

The third story introduces a politician who is giving a speech about Godzilla landing from space. Many are upset with him because the National Guard or police will not get mobilized to help out. As the politician tries to calm everyone, a man named Allen Gaines comes up with a solution to put searchlights all around because he believes it will scare Godzilla off. Godzilla comes anyway and once again wreaks havoc. This story showed how sometimes a community has to put their differences aside and work together when attacks or disasters occur. A lot of times, people forget that elected officials are also human, and they have the same fears. This is more of a To-Be-Continued story.

The fourth story finally brings us to Godzilla versus Chicago. A random woman just walking by a store finds an energy drink that makes her grow big; she gets excited that she is big. She only enjoys being big temporarily because Godzilla arrives, and she feels Godzilla will destroy the city. So she makes herself small again by drinking the same drink. This story could have been more exciting if she battled Godzilla. I wish the drink made her big and gave her powers and strength. Seeing Godzilla battle anyone its size is awesome and exciting. The story does provide a good laugh for those who fear Godzilla and know the destruction Godzilla can cause.

I look forward to the next comic book, Godzilla vs. Los Angeles. I have high hopes for Godzilla vs. America—it will be a great comic book series. I need to catch up on more Godzilla comics. I wish these four stories could have been longer to show more Godzilla scenes, offer more of a climax, have more battles, and create more suspense.

Rating: I give Godzilla vs. Chicago a rating of 3.5

Pastrami Nations out of 5.
