The Victories #5 Review- It’s All Down to This

This series has been building to a boiling point, and with the last few issues it’s been going at light speed. Now, with the big finale for this mini series, how does Oeming’s The Victories end?

Liked it started: with a bang.

The series has been non stop action and violence, with the underlining theme of the hero fallen from grace, Faustus. Locked in jail with revenge on his mind, this issue ties up everything that has been boiling since the first issue. We get a great resolve, met with the bloody goodness fans have come to expect from this modern day superhero epic.

Oeming, best known for his iconic work on Powers, has brought the world something special with The Victories. It’s a dark side to superheroes, showing the dark side of humanity many of us choose to ignore. The showdown between Faustus and his hated mentor The Mark is exactly what heroes are made of, with the Jackal goating Faustus on to cross the line of what it means to be a hero. Oeming’s art sets the mood of the book: a dark, brooding backdrop for the characters to show who they are when the chips are down.

I am a bit sad with this book, as it marks the end of what has been an amazing series. The book started strong and ended even stronger, leaving me to want to revisit this world again and again. Luckily, The Victories will be showing up in Dark Horse Presents, so the story of this mature themed superteam isn’t over. I highly recommend not only this issue, but every issue of The Victories: be a part of something awesome. I give The Victories #5 a perfect @@@@@ out FIVE.
