Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta return with Absolute Batman #2, the next chapter in their DC groundbreaking Absolute title. Following the thrilling debut issue, this chapter digs deeper into Bruce Wayne’s isolated life, exploring the forces shaping his identity and the interconnected layers of Gotham’s shadowy criminal underworld.
This issue reaffirms that Batman’s journey is rooted in violence—a tragedy that shaped his destiny. However, the story takes an unexpected turn when Alfred Pennyworth, now reimagined as a relentless MI6 agent, starts tracking Bruce Wayne. Alfred uncovers a web of connections between Bruce’s reclusive life and the Black Mask Gang, a dangerous and enigmatic network. What follows is an emotional and action-packed clash as Batman faces off against Alfred as the Party Animals attack in force.
Adding more to these modern mythos, we are introduced to familiar faces from Batman’s rogues gallery, including a pre-transformation Harvey Dent, whose charisma hints at the darkness to come, and a young Oz Cobblepot, whose may or not end up being one of Gotham’s kingpins of crime. But perhaps the most intriguing element is the subtle teaser of Selina Kyle. Seeing her a part of Bruce’s childhood is a swerve and could end up shaping a darker future.
Snyder’s storytelling masterfully weaves these familiar characters into this reimagined Gotham, creating a rich tapestry of interconnected lives. Dragotta’s art continues to shine, delivering stunning action sequences and moments of quiet tension that perfectly capture the stakes. From a harrowing action packed showdown to a haunting glimpse of Selina in her element, every panel is dripping with atmosphere.
The evolving dynamic between Bruce and Alfred is the heart of this issue. Pitting these two figures against each other, both ideologically and physically, adds a fascinating layer to the story. And with the rogues gallery slowly taking shape, the stage is being set for an explosive future.
Absolute Batman #2 builds on the first issue, offering a deeper dive into Gotham’s dark corners while teasing a larger narrative. This issue is a phenomenal entry in what’s shaping up to be a standout series.
