Bloodshot Unleashed #1 Review

Bloodshot has been one of Valiant Comics’ heavy hitters since the classic days of the company. The pale gunman has been on both sides of the law, the unkillable human weapon with nanotechnology in his blood. With Bloodshot Unleashed, we get a mature readers’ book that puts Bloodshot on a collision course with more man-made monsters looking to drive up their body counts.

From Deniz Camp, Jon Davis-Hunt, Jordie Bellaire, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, this series is definitely the direction Bloodshot needs to go. Bullets are flying, bloodshed by the gallon- it makes complete sense for this series. This issue opens in a very dark place, where we see how the tragedies of Bloodshot’s life have created someone with no real will to live- just trying to find peace at the end of it all. But peace isn’t what he gets when he learns about 27 man-made monsters, weapons in their own right, which were discarded by their agencies and are now free with death on their mind. This puts our antihero in the crosshairs of one of those weapons- one who has already killed 1,000 people and with no plans of stopping.

Valiant pushes the mature reader’s envelope here with some genuinely dark and disturbing scenes. The story is simple and to the point, yet it gives us enough reason to care. The artwork is super detailed, from the character designs to supercharged action scenes. Bloodshot Unleashed unleashes Valiant’s madman in 2022, and I, for one, am here for the ride.
