Chronicles of the Unknown #1: The Voices of Indie Creators

By Nolan P. Smith
Editor | Pastrami Nation

I’ve always had a deep love for comic books and graphic novels. Sequential art has been my favorite storytelling medium since childhood—back when I’d lose myself in the pages of G.I. Joe Special Missions or the latest issue of The Amazing Spider-Man. So, when I heard about a new anthology-style comic that embraces indie storytelling, I had to check it out. Not only because I’m a huge supporter of independent comics, but also because it features a story from Pastrami Nation’s very own Entertainment Editor, Kevin Hoskinson.

Welcome to Chronicles of the Unknown #1 from Dark Myth Comics.

An Indie Showcase of the Mysterious and the Strange

Dark Myth Comics is a newcomer to the comic scene, but they’ve assembled an impressive lineup of creators to explore tales of the unknown—each with a distinct artistic voice and narrative style. This 68-page giant issue is a treat to hold in your hands. From mythological tales like Odin and the Volva, to the cosmic weirdness of The Bionic Caveman and The Adventures of Wonder Duck, to spine-tingling horror in It Walks at Night, this anthology delivers something for every fan of the bizarre.

Each story feels personal—an artist’s window into their imagination and fascination with the mysterious. Here are just a few standouts.

Meb’s Meats

By Ed Bickford III

This black-and-white story drops readers into a meat delivery run on the planet Uranus 2. It’s every bit as off-the-wall as it sounds—and that’s exactly why it works. The art is raw, the pacing tight, and the designs of the alien creatures are brilliantly executed. It’s quick, fun, and leaves you curious about what’s lurking just beyond the next delivery.

The Tradition

By Kevin Hoskinson, Godspower Paterick, and G. Ismail

This chilling tale of horror and heritage is hauntingly effective. Knowing Hoskinson’s love for the paranormal, it’s no surprise to see him dive deep into a story like this. The polished artwork and folklore-inspired storytelling make The Tradition feel timeless—like a ghost story whispered from one generation to the next.

Chronicles of the Unknown is a labor of love and I’m honored to be a part of it,” said Hoskinson. “It’s filled with stories of the strange and unknown, created by incredibly talented writers and artists. It’s my first published work, and I’m beyond excited to share it with the world.”

Hearts of Desire

By David K. Montoya, John Kotsis, Godstime Ismail, and Drew Lenhart

A tale that blends the world of lucha libre with the supernatural, Hearts of Desire follows a luchador tempted by forces beyond the ring. As a lifelong wrestling fan, this one hit home for me—mixing the high drama of wrestling with a Faustian twist.

“I took inspiration from the pulp magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, which led to the creation of Chronicles of the Unknown,” said creator David K. Montoya. “Like the golden era of comics, I wanted multiple short stories, but also an open space for independent creators. I brought in several top talents to give this issue its own distinct voice.”

Final Thoughts

Art is a reflection of the creator’s world—how they view life, death, and everything in between. Chronicles of the Unknown offers a glimpse into those minds, each story peeling back another layer of imagination. Whether you’re drawn to mythology, cosmic adventure, or eerie tales that keep you up at night, this anthology has something for you.
