More snapping turtle-like monsters in the Bayou. Yeah, I know, you were thinking the same thing. Welcome to Loggerhead: Bloody Bayou #1 from Scout Comics.
Created, written, and drawn by Bryan Sliverbax, Loggerhead gives us a new modern-day cryptozoological legend, like Bigfoot or the Chupacabra. Let’s get to the story: the world is very different in Loggerhead: there were great wars that left parts of North America into a literal wasteland. Mutated kids band together for safety and companionship, trying to stay safe from what lurks in the shadows and what lurks in the hearts of men. We see one of the Bayou threats at the intro of the book as Loggerhead dismantles two trespassers in bloody fashion.
When a group of kids, some mutated by the land, come across men scavenging for resources, they are faced with a fight or flight situation. When you are against men with guns, it should probably be flight. As the altercation rages on, a legend emerges from the swamp: Loggerhead. We learn about the myth of how he came to be, but more importantly, we witness it firsthand. Silverbax writes and illustrates a modern-day monster classic with Loggerhead. The over the top violence, the brute strength, the fantastic design of this character: trust me, after reading this issue, you will want more of Loggerhead- just like I do.
Silverbax creates something extraordinary here, and I applaud Scout Comics for bringing this book to the spotlight. I love a good monster story, and Loggerhead is just that. I want to dive more into this world. I want to learn more about this monster/protector; I want to see what else exists and anything that can oppose this massive beast. Loggerhead is Rated-R violence fun told in my favorite art form. Please go check it out, and don’t miss all the awesome covers available!
