The Return of a Legacy
Valiant Comics have long held a special place in my heart. From flipping through vintage X-O Manowar issues to diving into the dark, stylish world of the original Shadowman video game, the Valiant Universe was a defining part of my comic book journey. When Valiant relaunched in 2012, it brought with it an incredible blend of nostalgia and reinvention. Now in 2025, the Valiant Universe rises once again—this time through Alien Books. One of the first titles? One of the most iconic characters in Valiant lore: Shadowman.
Welcome to the Deadside
Valiant Beyond: Tales of the Shadowman #1 kicks off a new era with a haunting and action-packed reintroduction to the supernatural antihero. Written by AJ Ampadu with art by Sergio Monjes, this issue serves as both a continuation and a fresh entry point for fans old and new.
The story brings Jack Boniface—aka Shadowman—back from the shadows, ruling over the mysterious and terrifying Deadside. But when a distress call reaches him from the mortal world, he returns to New Orleans, where the monstrous Mr. Twist awaits—an enemy whose ties to the Deadside run deep.
Story and Tone
Ampadu’s writing brings a rich, ominous tone to the book, striking a great balance between gritty street-level action and high-stakes mysticism. Shadowman is haunted—by his past, his choices, and the realm he watches over—and that weight is felt throughout every page. The pacing works well for a first issue, setting up the stakes and hinting at deeper mysteries, especially with the final page twist that longtime fans will immediately recognize.
Art and Atmosphere
Sergio Monjes’ artwork is phenomenal. The Deadside, in particular, is illustrated with a brooding elegance that immediately sets the tone—it feels like a mix of Hellblazer and The Sandman’s Dreaming. There’s a cinematic darkness to every panel, making the transition between realms all the more striking. New Orleans is also beautifully rendered, offering a gritty yet mystical backdrop for Shadowman’s latest battle.
Final Thoughts
Valiant Beyond: Tales of the Shadowman #1 is a strong, atmospheric return for one of Valiant’s most iconic characters. Ampadu and Monjes breathe new life into the supernatural side of the Valiant Universe with respect and bold creativity. If this is a glimpse into what Alien Books has in store for Valiant’s future, then count me in.
