The DC Cinematic Universe has undergone a much-needed reboot under James Gunn’s leadership, and the first official project to roll out is the animated series Creature Commandos on Max. But can this unconventional series of monstrous misfits pave the way for DC’s redemption? The answer is a resounding yes.

Despite some minor flaws, Creature Commandos is a standout success. The series takes a team of monstrous antiheroes, assembled and controlled by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), and thrusts them into missions that rival even the Suicide Squad in chaos and unpredictability. Led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), the team features The Bride (Indira Varma), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), Weasel (Sean Gunn), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), and G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn). Their initial mission? Save a princess (Maria Bakalova) from the sorceress Circe (Anya Chalotra). But as things often go in the DC Universe, the story twists, and their orders shift to assassinating the very princess they were tasked to save, all in the name of global survival.

The seven-episode series takes time to dive into each character’s backstory, adding depth and sympathy to this ragtag group of villains (Frankenstein, voiced by David Harbour, is a notable exception). G.I. Robot and Weasel’s episodes are standout highlights, delivering a mix of humor, emotion, and action. The animation is top-notch, balancing vibrant visuals with the visceral, bloody combat that defines the series. And with its tantalizing cliffhanger, it’s clear Season 2 is already in the works.

Not everything is perfect. The first two episodes feel a bit sluggish compared to the rest of the series, and the soundtrack, while energetic, can come across as grating and out of sync with the narrative’s tone. However, these are minor gripes in an otherwise stellar production.

Creature Commandos achieves its mission: it sets a strong foundation for DC’s new direction and proves that even the most unlikely characters can shine. Packed with gore, wit, and heart, this adult-themed animated series ranks among the best of its kind.

Rating: 4.5 Pastrami Nations out of 5.

It’s a bloody good start to DC’s new era—and one you shouldn’t miss!
