No, it isn’t a joke, though I wish it was. Just weeks before opening, the newest entry to the G.I. Joe franchise gets pushed back until next year, reportedly for a 3D conversion.

Here is from the official press release from Hasbro:

PAWTUCKET, R.I.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Hasbro, Inc (NASDAQ:HAS), and Paramount Pictures, announced today that G.I. JOE: RETALIATION will now be released in 3D. The film, originally slated for release in June 2012, is scheduled to be released March 29, 2013.

“It is increasingly evident that 3D resonates with movie-goers globally and together with Paramount, we made the decision to bring fans an even more immersive entertainment experience,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s President and CEO.

What do you think? Yes, this does put the film opening on the same weekend as Wrestlemania 29, which will once again feature The Rock. Smart marketing? Perhaps, but it sucks for all those hyped for what appeared thus far to be an actual good G.I. Joe movie.
