Cryptozoology has always fascinated me. From my childhood obsession with Bigfoot to my time on a paranormal podcast, I’ve always been drawn to the mysteries of legendary creatures. So when Let This One Be A Devil from Dark Horse Comics was announced, diving into the lore of one of the most infamous cryptids—the Jersey Devil—I knew I had to check it out.

Written by James Tynion IV (Something is Killing the Children) and Steve Foxe (Dark X-Men), with haunting artwork from Piotr Kowalski (Bloodborne), Brad Simpson, and Tom Napolitano, this first issue delves deep into the chilling origin of the Jersey Devil.

Set in the early 1900s, we follow Henry, an educated man who returns to his family farm after his father’s passing. However, when his livestock is savagely slaughtered by an unknown force, Henry embarks on a terrifying journey that leads him back to the 1700s—tracing the dark and eerie birth of the Jersey Devil.

As the first miniseries in Tynion IV’s True Weird imprint with Tiny Onion, Let This One Be A Devil sets a high bar. The writing is gripping, the atmosphere is unsettling in all the right ways, and the artwork perfectly complements the eerie, folklore-driven horror. The story captures the essence of cryptid legends, making it a must-read for fans of the strange and unexplained.

Whether you’re a longtime cryptozoology enthusiast or just love a great horror mystery, this is a series worth sinking your teeth into. And like me, you’ll be counting the days until the next issue.

Rating: 4.5 Pastrami Nations out of 5.
