The Wedding Ringer Review: Ringing in the Laughs

(Victor Valley)— What if you were two weeks away from marrying the girl of your dreams and suddenly realized you have no best man, you have no friends, and at your wedding, you will look like a total loser? That’s the premise here for The Wedding Ringer, the new comedic film from funny man Kevin Hart.
Hart plays Jimmy Callahan, the best man money can buy- he’s the hero for schleps that find themselves in such a situation. Doug Harris (Josh Gad) is one of those in need, as he is ready to marry his wife to be Gretchen (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) but has no best man or anyone for the groom’s side of the wedding for that matter. With only two weeks to go, Callahan must take on the persona of Doug’s fictional best man/best friend “Bic Mitchum”, a military priest no one has ever met. Not only that, but he has to round up enough guys to be Doug’s “friends”, all while trying not to blow his cover.
What we get is an absolutely hilarious film, a new original comedy that is sure to take off with fans from the get go. Hart and Gad are comedic gold on the screen, as they play off of each other with ease and make for some of the most awkward, funny moments you will see at the theaters this year. With this film, it is said that we get more of Kevin Hart being able to play Kevin Hart, and if this is true, we need more films like this ASAP. Hart steals the show as the smooth talking best man for hire, and his squad of merry men only add to the humor overall.
After seeing last year’s Kevin Hart comedy duo “Ride Along”, I wasn’t sold on Hart as an actor or even being funny for that matter. It was my first time seeing Hart, and overall Ride Along just fell flat. After this film, I can say Hart is on my list of comedians that deserve the silver screen treatment. This is definitely a mature comedy, with crude humor and adult themes abound, but you probably knew that from the previews. One of the funniest movies I have seen in years, I give The Wedding Ringer a solid @@@@ out of FIVE.
