Plastic #1 Review: Guilty Pleasure

PlasticPlastic astounds in its own way

By Amie Macias

Lucky for me, my editor picked me to read and review this sick comic, Plastic #1 from Image Comics. I mean sick in the good ‘ol fashioned dark comedy, perverted and gory sort of way; my favorite type of stories. Of course it’s also the sort of book that you glance over your shoulder twice to make sure no one is watching you as you grab it off the rack and hide it between other comics so you’re not thought of as “the creepy guy (girl)” by the other patrons in the store — It’s awesome!

Author Doug “potty mouth” Wagner (World of Warcraft: Bloodsworn, Legends of the Dark Knight, Witchblade/Red Sonja) did an amazing job with the storyline like a pusher only giving you enough to make you come back for more. His lead character has sort of a Norman Bates vibe, but a bit more twisted. Former CIA assassin, Victor, gets blackmailed into carrying out a hit, by an unknown adversary, in order to save Victor’s sweetheart, Virginia…..his blow up doll.

Daniel “scribbles” Hillyard (Average Joes, Sherwood Texas, ANTI) and Laura “cat lady” Martin (Astonishing X-Men, Serenity, Infinite Crisis) do an excellently, disturbing job with the artwork to show just how depraved the characters are. The noises vibrate off the page at you and reverberate through your soul.

I particularly liked that the other cover choices were included, as well as the thought processes behind the making of issue 1, and a sneak peak of issue 2. There are so many unanswered questions left, like who is the guy holding Virginia hostage. And what’s the deal with the action figure? What I do know is, I can’t wait to pick up, rather sneak, issue 2 off the rack and you should too!

I give this book a 9.0 out of 10 (not 10, because not everyone should read it)
