Pastrami Flick Review: Agent 88

(Victorville)— For this review, I reached to a short film not found in theaters, not found on television. No, I went with something that was funded by the crowd-funding site, Kickstarter, and really piqued my interest since I heard the premise. If you are looking for action, humor, and a martial artist senior citizen assassin, then you found it all with Agent 88.

Created and directed by Digger T. Mesch with Producer Jan S. Utstein, Agent 88 is a breath of fresh air, that’s for sure. Kay D’arcy stars as Agent 88, the elderly assassin with memory issues and a penchant to kill. This short film introduces us to the crime-infested world of Agent 88, and shows just how dangerous a sweet old elderly lady can be. We see the red coat wearing assassin dispatch thugs like they were paper, and does so in style.

What I really liked about this short film is the visual elements presented in it: it felt like a comic book sprung to life. I was reminded of the way the film “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” used visual elements and effects to perfection, and Agent 88 shines in the same way. It helps to grab ahold of you and keeps your attention for the duration of the flick. Kay D’arcy shows that age doesn’t matter as she kicks butt with the best of them with this breakthrough performance.

Hopefully, this is just the start for Agent 88, as it left me wanting more. Mesch does an amazing job showcasing his senior citizen killer within the confines of the 16-minute short. I can see Agent 88 catching on like a wildfire; who wouldn’t want to see this sweet, old lady dispatch opponents with punches, kicks, blades and bullets? I give Agent 88 a five out of five: it’s an amazing start to a new pop culture icon.
