Deadpool and the Mercs for Money #1 Review: Island of Misfit Mercs

Deadpool_and_the_Mercs_for_Money_1_CoverReview by Nolan P. Smith

(Victor Valley)—Deadpool is everywhere now: he has multiple series and mini series, a movie hitting the big screen, and merchandise at every mall. So now, we get another series, this time, a team book lead by the Merc with a Mouth- but is Deadpool and the Mercs for Money worth YOUR money?

By Cullen Bunn and Salva Espin, the books takes Deadpool and a comic book equivalent to the island of misfit toys: his merry band includes Solo (from 1990’s Marvel books), Slapstick (remember him from Marvel Series 3 trading cards?), Terror, Stingray (yes! He was an Avenger!), Foolkiller and more. The book is a heist gone wrong story, with a battle thrown in with a band of killers based on Alice in Wonderland characters. Personally, these characters were the worst part of the book for me: very annoying, but maybe that was the point?

Bunn and Espin create an enjoyable book here. Is it breaking any new ground? No. But it is fun, and if you love Deadpool, then there is no reason you shouldn’t scoop up this issue. If you do, might I recommend the action figure variant featuring Stingray? Stingray always had such an amazing design to him, it’s great to see him get the spotlight, even if it is only for a variant cover.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.
